The Science of Creativity: What Happens to Your Brain When You Paint

You know that feeling when you're lost in your painting? Time disappears, worries vanish, and you're in the zone. That's not just your imagination. There's science behind that feeling of calm, and it's one of the best reasons to paint.

Here's a peek at what's happening in your brain when you paint:

  1. Your brain goes into "flow state."

"Flow state" can feel almost like a like a loss of self-consciousness and sense of time, and also a feeling of pleasure and ease. It's when you focus on the activity instead of the outcome. This is why I say, "Enjoy the process!" It's a gift to yourself. Like "runner's high" without the sweat! It reduces anxiety and increases happiness.

  1. Your left and right brain work together.

    ree

While left and right brain theory isn't taken literally, it can help us understand how our thinking works between analytical and creative processes. When you paint, both sides communicate. Right brain (creativity) dreams up ideas and color choices, and left brain (logic) works on proportions and decision making. It's this balance that is refreshing to our brains, which often lean more to one side or the other.

  1. You release feel-good chemicals.

Painting can release dopamine, a natural brain chemical that makes you feel good. It's what happens when you hear your favorite song or accomplish something exciting. And it's why even if you're tired or stressed, you usually end up smiling by the end of a painting session.

  1. You relax without even trying.

    ree

When you focus on brushstrokes and mixing colors, your brain shifts to a calmer rhythm, similar to meditation. Your heart rate slows, your breathing evens out, your mind clears. No yoga mat required.

  1. You build confidence, one brush stroke at a time.

    ree

Each time you finish a painting, your brain gets a hit of pride and accomplishment. That's your reward center lighting up. This boost of confidence can spread far beyond the canvas, which is something we all can use in every part of our daily lives.

Now you know...Painting isn't just fun...It's creative self-care, an artful reset to a busy day!
