How to Make Your Paintings Look More Professional

Updated: Sep 1

Wanna know the secrets?

Well, actually they're not really secrets, but more like tips. And most of these tips are what I show you at my events. But with food, drinks, music, and just having a fun time, it can be hard to pick up on my tips every time. So here are some simple techniques to keep in mind if you want your next painting to POP!

  1. Layer your paints. The first coat isn't usually the only coat. Acrylic paints almost always look better with multiple layers. Colors that are a bit transparent will look vibrant with 2 or 3 coats. Don't worry that it will take too long. The second coat is a quick layer since the foundation is already there. Also, layering different colors can add depth and texture. Give it a try!

  2. Add highlights and shadows. This step doesn't need to be time-consuming either, but it definitely will make a difference. I like to save this step to the end, usually with simple swipes of white where I think the light would hit, then rinse my brush and add swipes of black or a darker shade of your color choice where I think shadow would be. No hard and fast rules. And if you add it and don't like some of them, wipe off or paint over.

  3. Clean up edges. When your painting is near completion, pay attention to edges that may look a little rough. A thin outline or crisp edge will make objects stand out.

  4. Finish strong. For an added touch, add a coat of varnish or clear coat spray to make colors pop and also protect paint from scratches.

This is my quick and economical go-to for a nice finish.

These are just a few quick tips that might make your painting go from---

"I like it," to "I LOVE IT!"
